We travelled from Edinburgh via Heathrow to Cairo on British Airways, arriving in Cairo without our three suitcases. Our journey was delayed by an hour and a half at Edinburgh then stood on the tarmac at Heathrow for a further half hour as there was no-one to put chocks under the wheels (crew announcement). As a result we had to rush to transfer to Term 4 for the Cairo flight, only to find that flight was also delayed as no-one had catered the plane. We assumed as we were delayed, our baggage would make the transfer with time to spare, especially as we had watched the ground staff removing baggage while we were stuck on the Edinburgh plane. Not to be, so we spent a very hot uncomfortable 5 days on a Nile cruise with no baggage. We were given a credit card to the value of £140.00 but as we transferred to the ship straight from Cairo there was no shops open to buy anything. We did get tourist t.shirts from a stall but, of course, they did not accept the credit card. At temperatures reaching 42 degrees C it was very unpleasant wearing the clothes we'd travelled from the UK in - it being cold and wet while we were there. We spent afternoons in our cabin while the crew laundered our clothes, so missed out on using the facilities on board such as the pool and sundeck. On arrival back in Cairo two of our suitcases finally arrived from Heathrow, but only 24 hours before we left to return to our home in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our third suitcase finally caught up with us 14 days later in Johannesburg.
This is not our first experience of delayed baggage with British Airways as our baggage has been delayed three times in the last four flights we have done with them - all in the space of one year, always on transfer through Heathrow; an abysmal record by anyone's standards. I appreciate increased security causes delays but the reasons do not seem to be security issues. On trying to get information regarding delayed baggage we (and our tour agents) were met with answering machines saying there was no-one available to take calls, then when we did make contact we were given excuses about weather and conveyer belt failures.
Being Brit's living in South Africa we regularily travel to the UK through Heathrow, but we have only had delayed baggage with British Airways, the worst delay being on the last occasion to Cairo, when we flew Business Class. This obviously does not give priority baggage handling as one would suppose.
Having written to British Airways by e-mail and letter on our return I am still awaiting a response from them.
Regards
Ann Goodman
