i travel every week between newquay cornwall and gatwick to work and back. the last few months have been an absolute hellish nightmare at the airport with both check in (BA) and security (BAA). The airline itself is fine. If I could travel any other way I really would.

I had to join a queue almost all the way around the checking in hall at Gatwick South on Friday 24th, 1500hrs and wait 45 mins before I got through security. The eve of the bank holiday I realise but then airports know about traffic flows at these times and yet two x-ray machines were not operational- but then you would expect that. Welcome to the UK's third world airports! You only just have to listen to comments of tourists to understand that not only does the UK have Europes worst airline (BA-just factually proven) but certainly its worst airports too. I remember when the world used to be in envy of everything British!. Thanks for listeneing.. Paul Holloway

Arrived at South terminal at 16.00. Queue for Security
stretched back as far as top of stairs to street level. passengers for flights closing constantly being pulled out by staff. Only two scanners in operation. Result undignified rush to get to plane before it left. Shops almost deserted Surely security could be done at departure gate as at Schiphol!

Checked in on line for domestic flight to Aberdeen. Joined queue around 5.00pm. Only 2 security lines operating at a peak time. Complained to BAA and got usual bland reply.

We were booked on an easyjet flight. As we approached the check in desks, there were queues, and we presumed some airline was managing a check in badly! Only when we had our boarding card did we discover taht we needed to walk around the other side of the lobby area (call it what you will, the upstairs check in area) and wait. Youngsters in yellow shirts where marshalling people and trying to answer obvious questions with no aplomb, as their superiors had not bothered to tell them much. When we reached the area near the departure check in/start of security, the queue was asked to form 4 lines from the one. This was very poorly managed, and no one could tell the demarcation lines. Finally we went through to discover that all four queues were reforming into one snake line again! The security was, as usual, varied. My husband was not asked to remove belt or shoes. I was (wearing walking boots, lightweight, and a cloth belt, only caused delays as no signs advised this was necessary - as indeed in his queue it wasnt.)
I have another suggestion which perhaps could make BAA wake up to client/user frustartion. If everyone did not spend a penny once through into the departure zone, BAA would loose revenue, and a couple of days no revenue might prompt some press attention.
Whatever, we are not going to use the London airports again. Heathrow is so bad, you can land there, but not be parked for an hour if the plane has to cross back over an active runway before docking. On two occasions , when parked on the tarmac, steps have taken 30 minutes to materialise....the palne was a scheduled flight, how could its appearance be a suprise?
