My family and I were returning to Inverness from Portugal after a 2 week holiday and unfortunately we had to go through Gatwick as our local airport couldn’t get us direct. At Gatwick we were delayed 4 1/2 hours, 3 of which was in the departure lounge, we were due into Inverness at 9pm but never got there till 1:45am. If it wasn’t for the crew of our plane, (they had to load the bags themselves), and the staff at Inverness keeping the airport open we would have been sent to Glasgow or Edinburgh. It was a complete nightmare and I will NEVER go near Gatwick toilet again, I spent about £90.00 on food/drink and kids entertainment and I am still waiting to here about my claim, 4 months later…!

With regards to security check in - we were lucky - there is a new entrance to departures and security checks are carried out through a small door at the top of the escalators near the restaurants - they were just opening it when we walked past - down stairs the queues were massive - must have taken some people over 45 minutes to get through
TC TIP - look out for the staff with the 'I am here to help jackets' on the first floor

Dropping off the fishing rods worked really well (as did picking them up). We were worried about that. Security was very thorough if a little slow leaving Gatwick. The route down to the domestic gates in the South terminal seemed to have been scrubbed up.

Fast and efficient progress through security and check-in with Easyjet. Faster than I had anticipated. Would be happy to use Gatwick again.

The XL check-in was a shambles. There was a queue for each destination but customers couldn't identify which queue they should be in and there was no help. We ( as were others) were in the wrong queue for 20 mins and passengers were constantly asking where they should be queueig for their flight. Having got in the right queue it was the slowest moving I have ever come accross. The passport barcode reader wasn't working so passport details were being typed in and the baggage conveyor kept jamming .The most efficient check-ins are those where there is only one queue for all of the airlines destinations.
The security queue was a joke - the longest I've ever seen. It took a good hour to get through and passengers could easily have missed their flights. As we were travelling in September I would have thought the airport could have got it's act together. They need to seriously look at how they can speed things up. In contrast coming back from Malaga it took half an hour to check-in and get through security.
