Regular user of T1, always around 07:30 outbound. BA check in is worsening though security delays are improving.

I read your piece and I cannot agree more. Heathrow is awful. But I find it on a par with the USA airports I've visited. American staff, I know its hard to believe, are actually ruder than their UK counterparts. Miami and Tampa are hardly the tourist-welcoming havens they are supposed to be. Worst time through immigration 5 hours best 2 hours. Heathrow looks better all the time.

June 25. Terminal 1 outbound to Nice with BA. Only 1 security checkpoint open, thus taking 1 hour 10 minutes to clear security.
Impossible to check baggage with BA until 2 hours before departure. Impossible to check in online and obtain seat asignment until 24 hours before departure. Here in the U.S. I make my seat selection at the time of ticket purschase, often months in advance. (But then when I have a choice I don't fly BA).
Return to the UK June 30. Arrival at Terminal 1 at 20.00 hours. (Actually 21.00, the plane touched down on time but then took an hour for us to get to the gate)
20 minutes for me to clear immigration with a UK passport. 1 hour 20 minutes for my wife to clear immigration with a U.S. passport! This, in a dreary, miserable immigration hall, manned by surly, scruffy, rude personnel, who looked as though they themselves would attract more than a passing glance from security if they did not have their identity badges!Outside, total chaos as all approach roads were closed due to the earlier incident in Glasgow. Absolutely NO information given to incoming passengers about how to accomplish ground transportation. We finished up walking through underground tunnels to Terminal 3 where I was able to bribe a rental car shuttle driver (thanks to my rental car company gold card), to take us to the Rennaissance Hotel where we had reservations as we were leaving early next day to return to the U.S.
I read frequently about foreigners moaning about U.S. immigration. When we arrived at Miami the next day we were greeted by a large, bright, cheerful immigration hall, with 34 of the 35 posts manned by polite, well dressed unifomed staff and were through in about 5 minutes!
If I cannot avoid Heathrow in the future then I will simply not make the trip.
Complaints to BAA resulted in nothing more than airy fairy nonsense about how they are working to make Heathrow great in the future. Not ONE WORD of apology or explanation for what heppened here.
Oh, sorry, there was one word - immigration is not our problem!
Good luck.
If I really must ever return to the UK in the future I think I'll fly to CDG and take the train.

I arrived a security 2 hrs before departure. I was told that due to long line I had to wait until 45 min before departure. It takes 30 min to reach the gate from the lounge. Rediculous rule.

Travellers were herded outside terminal 4, denied entry until a hour before the departure of their flight. On entry into the terminal, we had to queue for 40 minutes, so by the time people got to the front of the queue their flights had closed.

was late for check in due to accident on m25. flight was delayed for 3 hours but was not permitted to check in. was made to fly to New York instead of scheduled chicago on a flight whose check in should have closed as well. instead was able to check in. this was with air india. they overbook and close early. clearly their rules for checkin were not applied on the new york flight as we were able to get on. it seems air india make up their rules as they go along. the flight to new york was due to fly at 1.40pm, the flight we were denied was due to fly at 1pm. we were checked in for the new york flight at 2.30pm as the flight was delayed in that one too! other passengers delayed as well were handled in a rude manor at check in and told it was our fault for arriving late! we were stuck for 3 hours on the motorway due to a road accident! to be told that check in closes an hour before fiying-this is rubbish as we were then able to check in for a flight which should also have been closed! this cost us a further £500 for flights from new york to chicago and hotel accomodation not to mention stress and anxiety caused. i want to make this known so people do not fly with air india as they are forever overbooking and running a very shoddy operating system.
