The holiday excitement always starts as soon as we get to the airport. It is a big part of the overall experience. To get into departures at Manchester and be faced with a theme park ride queing system that snakes back and forth for a ridiculous amount of time is not what we expected or deserved. If our Politicians and rich celebrities had to submit to being hearded like animals with the masses, things would be changed pretty damn quickly. I will certainly be booking future breaks that specifically avoid a Manchester departure.

I always fly from Manchester to work in Hamburg every week, I try to fly back in the country early in the morning on a Friday and fly back on Sunday evening. I know Manchester can be quite bad at times, but I must have been lucky, I have had very little queues to wait in, at check in, security and immigration. There are currently revamping T1 and soon the security screening will be done where the current departure lounge is now after check in, so things should be quicker then, I think the immigration is there biggest problem at the moment. Patience is needed, once all three terminals have had there changes made, things will be better. Manchester can and should be doing better though; it is more than capable in my book.

I am totally frustrated with UK airports and carriers! The entire UK tourism industry needs to undertake a reality check compared to France, Italy, and other EU nations. You have become "too expensive"! The UK carriers and airports have excessive delays compared to other EU nations. Even more frustrating is the cash grab (especially at Manchester) for overweight luggage. Carriers flying into and out of Manchester have weight restrictions on carry-on and checked luggage that are out of line with EU and North American carriers (or flyers at their point of origin). For example flying into Manchester - no weight restriction on carry on luggage 20 kg for checked luggage. No problem, then flying out of Manchester... a 5 kg max on carry on is imposed plus a 18 kg max for checked luggage. "For safety reasons" you are forced to get your carry on down to 5 kg by re-packing the excess into your checked luggage and guess what... now you are assessed an overweight charge. I paid 50 pounds outbound to Toulouse and 60 pounds outbound back to Canada for myself and my wife. What a rip off! especially when the guy next to me has a body weight of 130 kg compared to my 70 kg. I would ask that (i) you conduct an independent inquiry into the accuracy of the scales at the check in counters and (ii) press the airline carriers for a consistent policy re: luggage weights across all airlines whether departing the UK, EU or North America.

When I checked my luggage at home (on bathroom scales which I believe to be accurate) it was not overweight. I would like to have this independent inquiry take a 15 kg weight and place it on all scales at every check-in counter in every airport... do you have the courage to do that? I suspect that in a disproportionately large number of instances... it would not weigh 15 kg! Can you imagine the total revenue generated by airlines for the airports due to overweight charges alone? Quite scandalous! Airports could pay for their renovations in a very short perod of time.

I travel thru approximately 50 airports per year on 5 continents. I have enjoyed visiting the UK for the past 27 years but the shabby treatment provided by UK airports and UK airlines will (probably) cause me to fly direct to the European continent to make flight cvonnections, to vacation, do business, and spend my money in those countries.
I CHALLENGE THE UK TOURISM INDUSTRY TO CLEAN UP ITS ACT!
Perhaps airline industry representatives should attempt to convince me and many other dissatisfied customers (the numbers are legion) that our continued business is of value to them or do they truly believe that there are "new" customers that will fill our vacated space(s). Word of mouth is a very valuable marketing tool both in a positive and in a negative manner.

I find it hard to believe that the UK press has not made a bigger issue of these complaints.

Pleas DO contact me... I checked off the box but please remember I am 8 hours behind GMT and no calls between 2300 and 0700 Mountain Standard time! I await your call.
Yours truly
Lynn Clark
sign me...
A Canadian who loves the UK but will probably change my holiday location to a spot OUTSIDE the UK and ensure that flights (for business and pleasure) do not entail stopovers in the UK.
